One of the most difficult calls I have ever made was to Janna to tell her that Jeffery had died. I didn’t really need to tell her. She was still on her trip, so as soon as she heard my voice, she knew the only reason I called was for something important.

I shared the story of Jeffery’s peaceful but sudden death, and she was quiet. There was nothing funny she could say and no humor she could find to make the news less painful. We hung up, and I assume she wept, as I did.

I sat there thinking about how many times I had read Bible stories. Hearing those stories not just retold but literally prayed by these faithful people, and watching the way that the stories themselves ministered to them better than any chaplain ever could have, I realized how powerful the Word of God can be.
